That said, there are times when it is very obvious that some kind of change is required.
River Plate is one of those cases.
Almeyda has tried many systems, keeps changing weekly personnel and tactics.
From 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and then the names that change game after game.
It is clear that he can’t and has not found the way for his team to perform the way he wants them to.
It is not a matter of a player or two. It is also not a matter of formation.
No matter what he has attempted, the results have not been there to back up his ideas.
The players seem lacking confidence and understanding of what is expected of them, there is no direction, no style of play, no identity.
Of course the opposition shapes the way your team plays, but Almeyda has not found a way to gain respect from River rivals on the pitch.
And when teams lose respect for you, then you are in trouble.
Nothing seems to work as if it was planned, trained or practised during the week.
All looks improvised, and badly improvised.
One week someone is on the starting line up, next week doesn’t even make the bench.
That sends confusing messages to the ones that actually need to feel valued to perform to their best to try to win games.
The squad needs stability. If you know you are starting games, you get that confidence back. If you know you are on the bench or out, you train to try and win a place.
But if you are in today, out tomorrow, back in the following week it leaves you wandering and guessing what is that the manager expects.
You don’t know if you are in for your merits or because the boss wants to change tactics or because the guy you are replacing was not good enough.
When all these things happen, when you get out there to play games, you play with the same uncertainty that you have in your mind.
The results are there to show, that Almeyda has not found the answers he has been looking for from day one.
It is great that Matias gave his 100% to the club when they were relegated and nobody else wanted the job. It is great that he took River back to Primera Division at the first time of asking. But, is it enough to keep him at the helm when the team is heading back into a relegation battle and without answers?
I think not.
